What is SNAP?

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is part of a federal nutrition program to help low-income households purchase food. It provides a monthly benefit that helps families and individuals buy the food they need for good health.
  • The benefit is provided based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards are used to receive the benefit and can be used similar to debit cards at participating food stores. The benefit can be doubled in value by shopping at participating markets and food stores that support the Double Up Food Bucks program.
  • To apply for SNAP you will need your name, date of birth, social security number as well as your monthly income, and household and utility expenses, such as rent or mortgage, electricity, water, trash, etc.
  • PLEASE NOTE: At this time, processing SNAP applications may take up to several weeks. If you’re planning to apply or are in the process of applying, we recommend connecting with your local food pantry.

Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities

  • You are considered to be an older adult applicant if you are age 60 and older or receive SSI (Social Security Income).
  • You are considered a disabled applicant if you receive a government disability benefits such as SSDI (Social Security Disability Income).
  • Most applicants can complete the interview requirement by scheduling a telephone interview.
  • If you can prove that your monthly out-of-pocket medical expenses are higher than $35 per month, you can receive the benefits of a medical deduction ($165 or higher).
  • Different households have different certification periods. You must submit redetermination paperwork in order to continue to receive SNAP benefits, usually every 6 months. If your certification period is a year or more, you must submit a periodic change report once per year to remain active. Be sure to know when your redetermination or periodic change report is due to avoid lapses in benefits. Please check your PEAK account or call your department of human services for more information.

Online Purchasing and Delivery

  • SNAP beneficiaries can now order their groceries online through Amazon and Walmart. Some additional retailers, like King Soopers, are offering online ordering for curbside pick-up with an EBT card. When placing your pickup order, go to Payment Option and choose “SNAP EBT at Pickup.” When you arrive at your pickup location, swipe your EBT Card to complete your order. At this time, WIC is not currently accepted. Please see the grocer’s websites or call them for more information.​
