5 Ways Anyone Can Fight Hunger

by | Jun 10, 2020

Hunger has more than doubled in our state, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we need a community response to help combat it. Here are five ways anyone can fight hunger.

1. Advocate for the HEROES Act!

Write an email to your Senators and help Americans struggling during the pandemic! Congress is considering a U.S. House proposal that will help families and states cope with the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal includes a crucial provision that is long overdue –
a 15 percent increase to SNAP benefits that would help Coloradans put food on the table
and help our economy recover. (The average Colorado SNAP family receives just $1.29 per meal per person.)

Take a stand for our neighbors!

2. Join our Coloradans for a Hunger-Free
Colorado Facebook Group

Coloradans for a Hunger-Free Colorado harnesses the power of community organizing to ensure all Coloradans have access to affordable, nutritious food.

The group will focus on hunger issues, root causes of poverty and opportunities to advocate for a healthier and more equitable Colorado. This includes fighting hunger through social media platforms, email, and phone, at events hosted by our state legislature (hearings, forums, etc), and other opportunities to come together as a community. 3. Invest in Colorado’s Roots

Tell your state legislators to pass the Connecting Colorado Proud and Food Pantries Act by calling or tagging them in social media posts! Colorado needs this act passed and funded because it will help food pantries and food banks purchase critical meat, dairy and fresh produce from local Colorado farmers and ranchers. This ensures Colorado’s food system can survive the economic impacts of the pandemic and gets nutritious food where it’s needed most. Learn more here!

4. Hike to End Hunger

During this time of economic uncertainty, our neighbors need us more than ever. Join us online as we hike our neighborhoods and trails near our homes to raise funds and spread awareness about ending hunger in Colorado. Learn more at HikeToEndHunger.org and register here!

Can’t join us this year? You can still help by purchasing a Hike to End Hunger tank top, shirt or sweatshirt at Bonfire.com/hike-to-end-hunger.

5. Share Your Food Story

Let’s start a movement, one to benefit those in need and help inform solutions to hunger.Sharing stories on how COVID-19 is impacting our access to, and relationship with, food can make crucial connections between the people who need help and those who can assist.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Share your story on Facebook or Twitter
  • Remember to include #MyFoodStory and tag your friends, family, coworkers or
    other organizations to join you
  • Tag us (@HungerFreeCO on Twitter and @HungerFreeColorado on Facebook)
  • If possible, include a photo or video!

If you, or someone you know, would like more characters to share their story, please use (and share) our story form link (bit.ly/HFCCV).

Hunger Free Colorado connects people to food resources to meet existing needs
and drives policy, systems and social change to end hunger.
